Becky's First Day

So there we were:  tucked into the back of the minivan, knees up against the seat in front of us, and Becky asks me, "Is this how the bus to Langano is going to be?"  Hmm, yea, that would be a yes!  We headed up to Tora Hailuge- Becky is commenting on the herd of goats on the side of the road and I am thinking, "wait, aren't there goats in California?"  So we get out to meet my shoeshine boy friend Mamoosh, but before we run our errand (he is going to help me buy a cell phone for a friend) he wants to shine her shoes, please.

Well, she's wearing Converse.  I said "they are cloth, they shouldn't get wet" so he agrees, sits her down, and starts cleaning the outside white rubber part, then polishing THAT up with white shoe polish.  The laces are out right away and dumped into (dirty looking) water as he tells me, "Every night you need to teach her Amharic with a dictionary so she learns."

Thus begins her adventure..... we got the cell phone and stopped for lunch at a meat house with a huge cow leg just hanging outside right by the door on the way in.  It is good for me to see this country with new eyes.
